| “Nottingham Knockers” (so named as that's where the scam started) are on the prowl again and were reported to be operating in various parts of the county and also here in King’s Somborne only last week. What are “Nottingham Knockers”? Members of team(s) of people who are dropped into a location to cold call on residents to sell items such as cards, dusters clothe pegs, ironing board covers and other household wears allegedly as part of a rehabilitation scheme following a (typically) custodial sentence. How they Operate? They may apply pressure to easily swayed residents and may also show signs of aggression to unsuspecting residents to buy their goods. However, requests for water and use of toilet facilities are sometimes used as a pretext to getting into the properties with a view of typically a distraction burglary. Police Advice: Door to door sales people must have a pedlar's certificate issued by Hampshire Constabulary (which is provided after they have been assessed for any criminal record) Always ask for a Pedlar’s Certificate You are NOT and any obligation to purchase If you do wish to buy and believe the trader is genuine keep him/her on the doorstep at all times Close the door if you need to go and get cash If in doubt, contact the police on 101 |
