| Police issue advice following car theft in Kempshott. Police in Basingstoke investigating a car theft have issued advice to people selling cars privately in the area. On Monday, March 17, between 6pm and 10.45pm a black Mercedes C350 AMG Sport worth £28,000 was stolen from an address at Bunting Mews in Kempshott. The vehicle had been for sale privately. Earlier in the day an Asian man came to view the car by arrangement. The victim gave this potential buyer the spare key whilst he looked around the vehicle. The Asian man was not left alone during this time, however it was later discovered the key returned was not the same one he had been given. Police are now looking into whether these two incidents are linked, and would like to speak to the Asian man in connection with their investigation. PC Bannerman from Basingstoke Police Station has offered this advice to the public: If you are selling your car, don’t hand over keys to the potential buyer. Open doors or the bonnet yourself. Turn the engine over yourself and don't let anyone take the vehicle for a test drive unless you are in the car. Be wary of key swapping. There’s no reason why anyone should require the spare key for a viewing. If someone does act suspiciously, note how they arrived, and whether they leave by car or on foot. Anyone who may have had a similar experience while selling a vehicle in the area or who has any information is asked to contact PC Craig Bannerman at Basingstoke Police station on 101, or via the website http://www.hampshire.police.uk/internet/do-it-online/online-forms/message-for-officer.html You can also call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
