Horse Rug Theft is on the increase!!!!!!!!

Horse rugs are becoming a thief's target at present.  Recently rugs were stolen from a yard in Liphook including one off the back of a horse whilst it was in its field!

Thieves are not stupid. They can drive around look into field and  see horses with rugs on. Take note and return at their leisure and steal them.

With all the advice given over the years owners of equine property are still  not post coding or marking their property. What ever can be lifted, picked up…post code it!!

The best action owners of the rugs can do to prevent and deter stealing is make life difficult for the thief. Post code your rugs both sides so it can be seen and write your post code inside as well. The paint will weather so go over it when it needs repainting or marking.

Don't be prissy about not wanting to deface a brand new rug or even a second hand  or an old one. Your horse isn't fashion conscious. If a simple action of post coding your property will stop a theft then job done.

If the rug is unfortunately stolen then it means the thief has to do some extra work to remove the post code. Maybe it is not worth their while and they dispose of the rugs by dumping them.  Plus if horse owners looking to buy second rugs are observant and see rugs that have post codes or the feint markings of post codes then they should start querying the legitimacy of  the seller.

Remember a thief's best friend is the publics apathy

Any suspicions report it to the police or come through to Hampshire Horsewatch.

Theft of rugs is taking place every where, not just Hampshire. South West Regional Horsewatch meeting said that theft of rugs is on the increase in their areas. Attendees came from Dorset, Devon, Wiltshire and Avon and Somerset.

On another note and for your safety and preservation  wear high viz when out riding anywhere.

Plus equine crime is on the increase around the county. Review your security. You are the first line of defence to prevent crime.
