FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Livestock worrying by dogs

We have recently received disturbing reports of livestock worrying by dogs. One of the reports was in relation to sheep being attacked in the area of Butser Hill, Clanfield. A herd of thirty sheep were chased by at least one dog, causing them to break out of their field and being lost into nearby woodland. When they had been found and rounded up a pregnant ewe was found to have severe injuries to the facial area, at this time it is not known if the ewe or it's unborn lamb will survive.

Another report in the Steven Hill area, Yateley resulted in two goats having to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries after being attacked by three dogs, which have also subsequently been euthanized.

It is an offence under the The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 to allow you dog to worry livestock on agricultural land. This will include: cattle, sheep, goats, swine, horses or poultry.

PLEASE keep your dog under control at all times. Where livestock is present keep your dogs on a lead.  Everybody loses in these type of incidents.

EBay Scam selling agricultural equipment

It has been brought to our attention by a Country Watch member that there appears to be a scam being run through internet advertising and auction websites involving the sale of agricultural equipment.

A seller posts what appears to be a genuine piece of farm equipment at what seems to be a slightly lower than average price. The e-mails and invoices all appear to have genuine eBay logos on them and are using the eBay 'Buyer Protection Scheme'.

However, the eBay protection account has a specific name attached to it and the e-mail comes from eastern Europe. The telephone numbers attached to the item do not exist.

On this occasion the matter was reported to eBay fraud department and no money was lost, however, 2 days after it was taken off of e-bay the item was re-advertised on Gumtree.

If money had been paid into the account for the purchase of the item, the money would have been unrecoverable, and the item would not have arrived as arranged.

Please take care when purchasing items from on line auction sites, it is not uncommon for the fraudsters to produce some very convincing documentation using the auction site logos to make their scam appear to be genuine. The items are offered for sale at cheaper than average price to entice people to part with their hard earned money believing they are getting a bargain. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true…... It probably is!
