General Crime Prevention

Burglary Dwellings and Non Dwellings

It would appear there have been  a few incidents where items have been used from sheds or garages or left lying around properties to access the home. To this end a reminder could be given to residents asking them to ensure their valuable tools, machinery, bikes, garden equipment is properly security marked and securely stored. Where sheds, garages and outbuildings are used, a good lock with a good padlock will help to deter opportunistic thieves and shed and garage alarms are another thing to consider and can be purchased from most hardware stores.

If you have expensive equipment or possessions within outbuildings and would like to know how best to security mark them your local SNT will be able to advise. You can also find information on the Hampshire Constabulary website: http://www.hampshire.police.uk/internet/advice-and-information/crime-prevention/safer-homes

Items can also be logged with Immobilise.com, their website can be found at: http://www.immobilise.com/

Where your home is concerned, apart from ensuring there are good locks fitted on windows and doors and are locked securely when you are out or at night, again security marking items can help to reunite you with your possessions should the worst happen, Immobilise.com again can keep a secure confidential record of your possessions and as ever I would advise that if your have antiques or jewellery of value you should check with a reputable antique dealer or jeweller for advice on how to security mark them as some forms of marking may reduce their value if not done properly. Keys and bags should be kept out of sight of doors or windows and any monies not banked kept securely - again out of sight and light timers can used to give the impression that someone is home.

Personal Safety

If you are out and about try to keep personal value items safe. Purse lanyards are a good way of securing purses and keys inside a handbag or rucksack, wallets can be kept in front or inside pockets, mobile phones and iPods should be kept out of sight. If you take money from a cash point put it away out of sight before leaving the cash point and try to keep cash to a minimum, not carry large amounts around with you.
