National Fraud Intelligence Bureau SCAM |
|
|
| It has come to the attention of the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) that letters are being received by members of the community suggesting they have won a category in the Euro Millions Lottery International promotion programme. The letter suggests that the person has been selected from a computer ballot system drawn from over 90,000,000, individuals worldwide. The NFIB has become aware of the suspected fraud after people without access to email or fax, or who misunderstood the instructions, posted their claims forms back to the listed addresses. This inadvertently prevented their details being disclosed to the fraudsters. This scam does not ask victims to pay any upfront fee, but instead requests their credentials – including bank details, should be sent by fax to a number listed on the letter - which could be used to facilitate fraud. | As always, residents are reminded of the following advice: - Many postal scams look genuine and are designed to trick you. Never respond by sending money or personal details to unsolicited mail.
- If you respond to one postal scam you may be bombarded by others as your name may be circulated to other scammers.
- If you are unsure about a piece of mail, ask a friend for their opinion or contact Consumer Direct on 0845 404 0506.
- Beware of unwanted mail from outside this country or from a postbox (PO Box) address in this country.
- Consider registering with Mail Preference Service either online or by calling 0845 703 4599.
