|Although still in our first term, the pre-school is going from strength to strength with more children signed up to start, both immediately and in January 2012. As we get more new children on board we’re getting lots of questions from parents about our Outdoor Learning sessions and what they offer. |
For two Tuesday sessions per month and every Thursday morning we have an emphasis on outdoor learning. We’re currently using the sports field and Three Fields to explore our natural surroundings – having bug hunts, learning how spiders build their webs, and how plants and trees grow. However, once complete, we will be granted access to the school’s new eco-garden (as well as the school field and play areas) for these sessions which will mean we will have a safe, enclosed space for the children, whilst still allowing them to learn from the great outdoors.
Parent’s main concern seems to be what happens when it rains. We have the Committee Room in the Village Hall booked for all our Outdoor Learning sessions and the children meet there in the morning and will be based there if the weather is particularly wet or cold. However, if dressed appropriately (eg. wellie boots, waterproof trousers, coats if needed) they will be predominantly outside in the fresh air, learning about nature and the seasons. We can now confirm we have waterproof trousers, jackets and wellies in a range of sizes if children do not have their own, or have forgotten them, so they can all benefit from running around outside without getting wet or cold.
Behind the scenes, our Fundraising Committee is going great-guns. We’re getting prepared for the Christmas Fair on the 20th November where we’ll be selling Pocket Money Presents that children can buy for their parents, and offering a gift-wrapping service as well. We’re looking for donations of small gifts suitable for mums, dads and grandparents, so if you have anything you would like to donate, please call me on 01794 389554. Other exciting fundraising events will be announced in due course, so watch this space!
We’re still looking for a voluntary Lunch Supervisor to cover 11.30am – 12.30pm every Thursday. It would involve setting out the children’s packed lunches, sitting with them whilst they eat and clearing up at the end of the meal. This could be a job-share if you’d like to help, but can’t commit to every week, so if you’re interested, please contact Lucy Chadwick on 01794 389 587 or firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
We’re also registering children for start dates later in the school year so for more information, including session times, please call Lucy Chadwick on 01794 389 587, visit www.thesombornespreschool.org or log onto The Sombornes website.
