The Sombornes Pre-school

Pre-School opening a resounding success

We’ve done it! As of Tuesday 6th September, The Sombornes Pre-School has been up and running, and is proving very popular with both children and parents alike.

It’s been a busy few weeks for the children. They have been exploring the surrounding fields during the outdoor-learning Forest Sessions, have made an angel for the Angel Festival, created beautiful display boards with leaf prints and pictures for the open morning, and have had fun playing with all the toys and ride-ons. Some children have enjoyed themselves so much, they are reluctant to go home at the end of their sessions – I think you’ll agree, that is high praise indeed!

On Saturday 17th September our drop in Open Morning gave us a chance to show our supporters what we’ve achieved over the last few months, and for prospective parents to meet our supervisor Zoe Stevens and see what we have to offer their children. So Saturday morning saw the village hall set up as for Pre-School with a messy play area, painting and colouring table, book corner and home corner, whilst the outside area (with our collective fingers crossed that the forecast rain didn’t appear) was given over to play-tents and bikes.

There was a fantastic turn out, with a steady stream of people attending throughout the morning. We had a number of children sign up for sessions later in the term, which is a really positive outcome for us. Thank you to all those who came, and for your kind comments of support.

The committee did a sterling job baking and organising cake donations for the cake sale, so much so that our fundraising table was groaning under the weight of all the cakes and biscuits we had on offer at the start of the morning. We sold the majority of our cakes then and there, and took the rest to sell at The Working Men’s Club table-top sale that afternoon (Thank you to Janette for finding us a last-minute table!). Our final fundraising total for the day was £215 – a great first effort, and a solid step towards reaching our annual fundraising target.

We’re now looking for a fundraising sub-committee to get involved in organising various types of events throughout the year. It doesn’t have to be a massive time-commitment and you don’t have to be directly linked to the Pre-School, all we ask for is plenty of enthusiasm and ideas!

We’re also looking for a voluntary Lunch Supervisor to cover 11.30am – 12.30pm every Thursday. It would involve setting out the children’s packed lunches, sitting with them whilst they eat and clearing up at the end of the meal.

If you’re interested in either joining the fundraising committee or becoming our Lunch Supervisor, please contact Lucy Chadwick on 01794 389 587 or chadwick25@btinternet.com for more details.

Finally a big thank you everyone who has donated items to the pre-school, both big and small, and given time and effort to help clear and tidy the outside area. A special mention must go to Vermont Systems in Romsey who supplied and installed our pre-school computer and laptop, and has offered ongoing IT support if needed. Thank you.

We’re still registering children for start dates later in the school year so for more information, including session times, please call Lucy Chadwick on 01794 389 587, visit www.thesombornespreschool.org or log onto The Sombornes website.
