NEWS RELEASE Tuesday 19 July, 2011 Don’t be caught by distraction burglars Several reports have been made to the Police recently about attempted ‘distraction burglaries’ in the Test Valley area. Although anyone can be a victim of distraction burglary, bogus callers often prey on elderly or vulnerable people because they see them as easier targets. Distraction burglars pretend to be from organisations such as utility companies or the council and will distract people to enable them to get into their home so they can commit a burglary. They may claim to be tradesmen or workmen calling to carry out urgent repairs or simply someone asking to use your toilet, borrow a pen or retrieve a ball. Councillor Mrs Sandra Hawke, Housing, Health and Communities Portfolio Holder at Test Valley Borough Council said “If anyone comes to your door claiming to be from Test Valley Borough Council, they will carry identification that clearly states who they are and where they are from. All our staff are aware that they must show identification and will be more than happy to confirm their identity. If you are not convinced, then don’t let them in. You can call the Council on 01264 368000 or 01794 527770 to check whether Test Valley Borough Council staff are in your area”. If you have any concerns about someone calling at your door, you should call the police immediately and if possible on 101, make a note of their appearance and the vehicle they were driving. Ends.
