| Anyone for cream tea? You may recall that the July issue of The Gauntlet contained an article on the village hall developments featuring the new committee room and the refurbished kitchen with its state-of-the-art equipment and beautiful furniture. On Sunday, 12th July, the Village Hall Development Committee open up the hall for us all to view these latest renovations and partake in a scrumptious cream tea to mark the completion of the first two phases of the Development Plan.
Villagers started drifting in from 2.00 pm onwards and both rooms were soon full of visitors, the most popular being the kitchen - not just because of the tempting scones and pots of jam and cream on the counters! Plans and details of phase three were also available in the main hall where everyone gathered at 3.00 pm for the official dedication ceremony. Borough Councillor, Tony Ward, began the proceedings with a brief talk about the fundraising efforts and then handed over to Sue Holligan who gave an emotional eulogy on the lady whose name is now commemorated on the plaque above the kitchen door. Edith May Haydon never lived in our village but, aged 100, she left a fund to be donated for the benefit of a community. Having worked for many years in a hospital kitchen, Edith's family felt that our antiquated kitchen would be an appropriate recipient of Edith's generosity. Her grandson, David Haydon, replied to Sue with a warm words about Edith who, he suspected, would tut tut at 'all this fuss' in her honour!
