March report

Members of Kings Somborne W.I. met on March 12th when Alan Jones spoke about 'Sombody like you'.

He first talked about the make-up of our blood. We all have 8 to 9 litres of blood which is pumped around our body by our heart at a rate of 100,000 beats per 24 hours. He illustrated his talk with the use of felt copies of the body organs which he then attached to a specially designed apron modelled by our president which enabled him to explain the circulation and how the alimentary, urinary, and respiratory systems work. Throughout his talk Alan told us many amusing and surprising facts such as our stomach can hold 1.5 to 4 litres, our small intestine is 20 feet long and only 20% of our sense of taste is detected by the taste buds on our tongue, the remaining 80% is through smell receptors in our nose!

He ended his lecture by talking about some future technical advances such as those involving pace-makers which will be just the size of a grain of rice and will be bio-degradable and it is envisaged that within the next 20 years renal dialysis will be replaced with implants of artificial kidneys.

Our members agreed that his talk was most interesting and informative.

After the lecture plans were made for a WI 'extra' trip when we will meet for coffee at the Auto Barn at Sutton Scotney on Thursday 26th March.

Our next ordinary meeting will be held on April 8th when Lizzie Race will talk on 'How to save the planet - one outfit at a time?'
