January report

Our January event was a talk by Ruth Kerr entitled "A Walk Without Wellies".  Ruth guided us on a virtual walk around the UK using historic routes. The Romans built over 2000 miles of roads. Our route took us from the Meon Valley, up the west side of the country, through Wales. Thence to Teesdale where the Coverhead Estate  support black grouse through habitat restoration.

On through northern counties using Coal Roads (often impassable in winter), through Scotland using  Caulfield and Wade Roads, built by military men to allow troops to police the highlands.  We learnt of "destitution roads" - built by the poor in return for oatmeal.

We returned south via Watling Street, Ermine Street and Icknield Way and learnt about local wildlife.  Wheat and barley are grown along the Icknield Way, (between Thetford and Yeovil), due to optimal soil conditions.  Ruth's talk was beautifully illustrated.  We were pleased to support her chosen charity, The Country Trust, which provides access to the countryside for disadvantaged children.

Our February meeting will include a talk about birds of the Ascension Islands.  Visitors always welcome.
