July report

On the 10th July members and guests of Kings Somborne WI enjoyed a talk by Ken Fowler, who gave an interesting and informative account of his 'Race to Scotland'. This was an epic and often dangerous expedition undertaken to raise funds for Cancer Research. Ken has a lifelong love of sailing and exploration inspired by his father, who belonged to the Royal Navy. After his father, five cousins and his mother-in-law all died from cancer he determined to use his maritime skills to help raise funds to develop cancer research.

His first major effort was to make a complete circuit of the Isle of Wight in his very small boat (about the size of a large bathtub!)

Following the success of this venture, his next much larger challenge was sailing the same small boat from Land’s End to John o' Groats along Britain's West coastline. He was supported by two amazing friends in two campervans. They transported the boat and all the necessary equipment and provided sleeping accommodation each night. One night the small tent storing their catering supplies was invaded by a hungry badger who ate a fresh supply of 35 eggs! Other hardships were mainly the result of adverse weather conditions ranging from severe storms to being becalmed.

Highlights of the trip were the fantastic scenery along the Welsh and Scottish coastlines and the sighting of all kinds of marine wildlife. At one point, Ken's boat was surrounded by a pod of dolphins who stayed until two RNLI boats on a training exercise arrived and towed him to his destination!

Ken arrived in Scotland in a heatwave but soon stormy conditions made rounding Cape Wrath extremely difficult, together with unknowingly sailing through a submarine training area. His support team having to negotiate a bombing range with no proper roads! Unfortunately, due to extreme weather conditions, they had to drive the final short stretch to John o' Groats. The final distance covered 850 miles and total funds raised over £37,000. His next fundraising effort will be to circumnavigate all the islands of England and Wales to achieve his original target of £50,000.

Linda thanked Ken on behalf of the W.I. for his fascinating talk.

Since the last meeting some members had enjoyed afternoon tea at Houghton Lodge. Sarah mentioned that the walking group had a shortened walk due to the inclement weather and also asked members to think about any further outings or activities that could be arranged.

Three members had attended the W.I. Social event raising funds for Romsey Show WI Tent. Linda gave details of a WI holiday to Kent next April.
