May report

The annual Bean Car Club Daffodil Run took place on 14th April.  The event, which began in 1964, is open to all pre-war cars (built before 1939).  The route starts from the New Inn at Heckfield near Reading.  Entrants are provided with a route book which takes them along quiet roads to Stockbridge where, for many years, Houghton WI have provided coffee and cake in the high street.  The cars then drive towards the Alice Lisle pub in the New Forest to enjoy a picnic lunch on the green.  The event raises money for Marie Curie and has previously finished in Christchurch.  This year the organisers decided to try a change of venue to King's Somborne village hall.  The WI were asked to provide tea and cake to the drivers and their crews which was followed by the annual prize giving.

A total of 46 cars entered with tea and cake required for 110 hungry motorists.  The WI ladies baked in excess of 20 cakes with flavours ranging from traditional Victoria Sponge to carrot, fruit, chocolate and pineapple upside down cake.  The hall looked wonderful with colourful tablecloths and vases of fresh flowers.

Although the weather was dry, only about half the expected cars arrived at the finish, some having gone straight home.  The result was an excess of cake but space in freezers was found.  A rolling display of pictures from the event was shown on the big screen.  The organisers and entrants were suitably impressed by the hall facilities and WI hospitality.  We hope to see them back next year.

With huge thanks to everyone involved.
