Our speaker this month, Lucy Macdonald from the charity “Finding Freedom From Abuse”. outlined their work stressing in particular the need for those in an abusive situation to make sense of what is happening and for the Charity to ensure the safety of all as far as possible. She summarised the services they offer including those for children and young people and she stressed the importance of confidentiality. A very full and wide ranging discussion followed with Lucy answering all our questions. In particular she was asked about the effect the nature of the work may have on her and her colleagues.
The discussion then widened in scope as Marie Stubbington and Michaela Cavuoto from T.V.B.C. were with us. They were both willing to share their expertise with regard to anti-social behaviour in general but had some limited experience with regard to abuse.
During the evening we had all found the subject challenging and were grateful to have some insight into this topical and disturbing issue.
We had all been moved by what we had learnt and Sarah asked if there was anything else we could do as a W.I. to help. Lucy felt being aware of the extent of the problem and the work of the Charity was really helpful and she gave us some pamphlets to place around the Village.
The next meeting will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday, 11th October, and is entitled “Canapés” and our speaker will be Debbie Tomlinson. Debbie has been to us before and she is a really entertaining speaker. Also last time we were able to try her delicious samples.
Do come if you are able. All are welcome and it should be a fun evening.
