PARISH PLAN AT THE FLOWER SHOW
The Parish Plan Committee was at the 2004 Village Flower Show & Fete and generated a lot of interest with nearly 200 comments being collected from all over the Parish. Perhaps the free Somborne Wine tasting at the stand added to the flow of expression. A wide range of issues were raised.
TRAFFIC
This was the most dominant issue raised. People are very concerned about the volume, noise and in particular the speed of traffic through the village of Kings Somborne.
The comments pelled out the action required..
• In general just more Additional calming measures
• Flashing light speed indicators
• Restrict access to Lorries
• One Way system
• Post Office corner
• Enforce existing speed limits
• By-pass
About half the input was about the issue in general throughout the village but the other half were specific about the hazard areas highlighting the Romsey, Winchester and Furzedown roads
FACILITIES
If the traffic problem is a number one issue then there is, within the Facilities category another very emotive subject and that is street lighting.
Street lighting accounts for a quarter of the Facilities comments. Most people wanted to see no lighting at all, no more new lighting or more appropriate lighting. Many of the people in the Parish simply want to see the night sky.However there were other people who wanted street lights in key areas. Obviously this is an issue where the viewpoint of the whole Parish will be vital.
Street lighting was not the only aspect of Facilities which included
• Street lighting
• Access(for wheelchairs/prams)
• Footpaths
• Keep shops and Post Office
• Village Hall refurbishment
• Better Pubs
• Dog bins (more)
Security – keep the village policeman
SPORTS AND RECREATION
Of the comments in this category two issues stand out as the biggest.
The first was the need for play facilities on the recreation ground for young children and this generated some strong pleas including one lady who had the plans all ready to go and the costing worked out – all she needed was help in raising the money. The second largest group of comments was for a tennis court.
ENVIRONMENT
In this category some people called for digging out of the river, not just weeding, whilst others called for more tree planting. The rest of the comments on the Environment came from the external visitors. They all thought this was a fantastic and real English village. The village was a real tourist attraction that day.
HOUSING
Like the street lighting there is some conflict on housing. Some wanted more affordable property built, others wanted more property in general yet there was also comments calling for no more property built or tight restrictions on what was built.
NEXT STEPS IN CREATING THE PARISH PLAN
The Parish Plan Committee has been focusing on making people aware there is going to be a plan, why a plan is important and encouraging input into this initial stage. Armed now with all the comments received at the events the committee will be preparing a detailed questionnaire. This questionnaire will be delivered to everyone in the Parish in November. The results will enable a draft plan to be produced in March 2005. Remember YOUR PARISH YOUR PLAN so get the pens ready and when questionnaire arrives make sure you make your input.
